Critical Care
The critical patient is characterized by a complex picture of multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), of various etiologies. The application of apheresis therapies for blood purification in this context, considering the underlying pathophysiological aspects, is gaining increasing clinical interest. The goal is to restore the physiological levels of molecules and homeostasis, in order to control the adverse reactions caused by the accumulation of these molecules.”
The application of apheresis can become necessary in patients with severe infections and sepsis, severe cardiac and respiratory failure, acute renal failure, and liver dysfunction, as well as in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, particularly in cardiac procedures with cardiopulmonary bypass, which often induce the development of SIRS, MODS, infections, and sepsis in the postoperative period.
