PerLungs®

The complete ex-situ reconditioning system of lungs intended for transplantation

The donor lung undergoes a range of ischaemia/reperfusion damage, potentially compromising its functionality. For this reason, there is a need to subject the lung graft to ex-situ perfusion, trying to optimize its characteristics and assess its functionality with a view to transplantation.

PerLungs® in summary

The PerLungs® kit consists of oxygenators, leucocyte filters and centrifugal pumps to allow reperfusion of the lung, in a controlled environment, using dedicated solutions to support its metabolic needs.

The application of purification systems by adsorption of the perfusion solution it’s the core of the system. Numerous findings in the literature emphasise, in fact, the role played by a series of substances developed during ischaemia and put into circulation during reperfusion, first and foremost the inflammatory mediators, potentially capable of compromising organ function and leading to organ dysfunction 1,2,3,4. Removal by adsorption (PerSorb®) of these substances can therefore be decisive in the recovery of organ function and subsequent successful transplantation.

The PerLungs® Kit is designed to meet the specific needs of the centre using it, so that it can be applied with any extracorporeal circulation equipment.
