Immunomodulation: A New Paradigm in Ex-Situ Organ Reconditioning
Ex-situ perfusion is presented as a strategy to increase the suitability of organs for transplantation by maintaining the organ in a controlled physiological-like environment. Due to various factors, important inflammatory processes can be triggered, which contribute to the progression of organ damage, thus limiting transplantability and successful transplantation.
Remodulation of the inflammatory response, even during ex-situ perfusion, therefore plays a key role in limiting organ damage, thus favouring a successful outcome of the procedure.
