ApherCap

Simplicity and efficiency in CO2 removal

ApherCap is a multi-therapeutic platform that allows for extracorporeal treatment of acute respiratory insufficiencies in critically ill patients, particularly:

  • Removal of CO2 (ECCO2R)
  • Simultaneous CO2 removal and hemofiltration (ECCO2R+HF)
  • Hemoperfusion (HP)

The goal is to provide additional support to patients undergoing non-invasive and/or mechanical ventilation, aiming to alleviate and reduce the invasiveness of methods on the lungs by partially removing CO2 from the blood.

Therapies and treatments

In ECCO2R mode, ApherCap performs extracorporeal CO2 removal therapies, allowing for a reduction in the patient’s ventilatory requirements.

CO2 removal is obtained by a pediatric oxygenator in PMP, derived from ECMO circuits. It guarantees a lifespan of 5 days and maintains consistent performance over the long term. This method is proposed in various clinical scenarios, enabling:

  • A protective ventilatory strategy for patients with ARDS, attenuating the impact of ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI)
  • Reduction in respiratory discomfort, avoiding orotracheal intubation in COPD patients during disease exacerbations
  • Decreased incidence of tracheal intubation in cases of severe asthma (near-fatal asthma, NFA)
  • Administration of temporary therapy for patients with chronic respiratory diseases awaiting lung transplantation

In the ECCO2R mode performed with ApherCap, hemofiltration can also be combined, creating the ECCO2R+HF treatment. The hemofilter, positioned upstream of the oxygenator, provides adequate renal support in case of organ failure and optimizes the carbon dioxide removal process performed by the oxygenator itself.

ECCO2R + HF in summary:

  • Extended treatments up to 5 days without replacing/modifying the disposable kit
  • Blood flow rate variable between 30 and 450 ml/min
  • User-friendly interface
  • Post-dilution fluid handling
  • Weight reduction between 10 and 1000 g/h and hemofiltration exchange, facilitated by an automatic modular
Aphercap Hemoperfusion

Thanks to the presence of a peristaltic pump capable of operating between 30 and 450 ml/min, ApherCap is designed to perform Hemoperfusion treatments with sorbents dedicated to adsorption (CytoSorb®) of molecules responsible for the development of various pathological conditions from whole blood.
